We thought we would compile this list of 7 reasons why our last Syracuse Rising event of the year will be one you won't want to miss.
- Support a new locally owned business! Pale and Bucket is only a few months old and yet it already is getting rave reviews! It's a excellent neighborhood bar and grill with a great drink and food menu that works well for all ages. There's even a kids menu! Don't spend your money at a chain like Chilli's or Olive Garden tonight! Come enjoy what's unique about CNY and when you spend money at locally owned businesses, more of your money stays here, helping grow our economy.
- Celebrate the Westside! There are so many great parts to the Westside. On Tipp Hill there's the upside down traffic light, Colemans, the Blarney Stone, Burnett Park, the Zoo and more. In strathmore there's Onondaga Park, Elmwood Park and great events like Taste of Strathmore and Art on the Porches. Strathmore neighbors have a great sense of community. Then there's the Near Westside with all the art and diverse culture. There's the public art on the bridges that say "I paid the light bill just to see your face" and "Now that we're here, no where else matters". There's Nojaim Brothers Grocery, the Delavan Center Art Studio and the Gear Factory with their Before I Die wall. The list of great things on the Westside goes on and on, and now includes the Pale and Bucket! Join us there and discover the neighborhood with us.
- Network with other supporters of Syracuse! Wherever you are in your career or in life, Believe in Syracuse events can benefit you. If you're looking for a job, starting a new business, looking for potential candidates for a position you are hiring for, looking for supporters for your non-profit or cause, or looking for somewhere to volunteer your time, this is the event for you! We're expecting about 60 people so you never know who you could run into and connect with! Free and open networking will go on from 6-6:45 and from 7:15-8PM so bring business cards or just bring a smile!
- Learn about the Near Westside Initiative! Maarten Jacobs, Director of the Near Westside Initiative will be addressing the crowd tonight. We're so excited to have him because they have been all over the news lately. First they won a nationwide green building award from the U.S. Green Building Council. Then the Near Westside SALT District (Syracuse Arts, Literacy and Technology district) was the subject of an op-ed by a former president of the University of Maine. She had just recently made a trip to Syracuse and remarked about how the SALT district was a driving force behind the rebirth of Syracuse. She talks about how Syracuse declined sharply during previous decades just as Maine has, and held up Syracuse as an example of a community on the rise. Come celebrate how the Westside is part of that rebirth.
- Hear about great programs in the neighborhood! We are excited to welcome two other speakers to present tonight. Mary Beth Dooley Horsington will speak about the Strathmore Speaker Series and Thomas Dellwo from Cooperative Federal will be discussing the student run credit union at Fowler High School. Grassroots projects and programs like this are what makes Syracuse and our neighborhoods a better place. Believe in Syracuse is all about empowering people to organize on a grassroots level. Mary Beth and Thomas are already doing that so we hope you'll join them!
- Hear from a Fowler Grad & Say Yes Scholar! Gissell Ferreiro, a Westside native, Fowler High School Grad and Say Yes to Education Scholar will be speaking to us tonight. She is in her first semester at LeMoyne and is studying to be a math teacher. She is able to afford to go to Lemoyne because Say Yes made that dream a reality for her, as they do for so many of our city's young people. Believe in Syracuse strongly supports quality affordable education for our city's youth as a way of empowering them to overcome some of the challenges our inner city neighborhoods face. In the coming months we'll be rolling out how we plan to take action to make a difference for our city's young people. They are the future of Syracuse. Click here and RSVP to join us tonight.
- Find your passion and get involved! There are many ways to make Syracuse a better place. The first step is determining what you're passionate about. Maybe you're passionate about neighborhood development in which case you should come talk with Maarten tonight. Maybe you're passion is a business or business idea you have. In that case you should come tonight and talk to Luke who is the owner of the Pale and Bucket about what he's doing to build his business. Maybe your passion is young people and Education. For that you could come tonight and talk to Say Yes, Thomas, or talk to Believe in Syracuse about volunteering for our First Book Event. On Thursday 11/20 we'll be joining hands with Syracuse City Teachers in unpacking boxes of books and sorting them so they can be distributed to kids in need. For more info and to RSVP for that, click here.
There are many reasons why you should join us tonight at 6PM at Pale and Bucket. The first step here is believing in your community. If we believe in Syracuse, get together and organize to make a difference, there's nothing that isn't possible here.
