Why do we Believe in Syracuse? I am going to be starting a series of blog posts about why Syracuse is great and talk about the the great things Syracuse has to offer. Syracuse is great for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that it is affordable. CNN Money rated Syracuse the number one most affordable place to live in the country 2010. Syracuse is also a very livable city. Whatever you are looking for you will find it within a 15 minute drive, from parks to world class shopping centers to sports arenas to great restaurants. Syracuse is also in a very economical location in terms of transportation. You can hop on Route 81 or 90 and drive 4 hours in one direction and be in Montreal, or 4 hours in the other direction and be in New York City. The city of Syracuse also boasts an array of world class healthcare centers, such as the Golisano Children’s Hospital and the Level 1 Trauma Center at Upstate. If you go up to the hill, you will find quality education at Syracuse University, as well as Lemoyne College and Onondaga Community College, which are just a short drive away. If you head towards downtown Syracuse, you will find a large array of restaurants, museums, performing art centers, shops and nightlife in areas such as Armory Square. Around every corner you turn, you will always find something great about Syracuse. It is an affordable, livable and economical area that boasts an outstanding quality of life to its residents. Keep following my blog series to learn more reasons as to why Syracuse is GREAT! by Katie
This Wednesday at 5:30pm we will be holding an organizational meeting at Soule Branch Library. We will be gathering to discuss ideas for how we can take action and make a difference in our community. We believe Syracuse is a city on the rise and want to keep its momentum going. Join us and together we'll make a difference. As a general interest meeting - this is open to the public - all are welcome and encouraged to attend. The night will start of with a few introductions and John will give an overview of what exactly Believe in Syracuse is. Steve, Ben and Jessie will then give overviews of their areas of interest regarding neighborhood organizations, volunteering events and networking. After getting some general feedback from people, we plan to have Steve, Ben and Jesse host "breakout groups". The goal of these groups are to get feedback and meet people with similar interests within the organization. Towards the end of the evening, all three groups will report back for thank you's and a brief closing. This organizational meeting is a great opportunity to get involved with Believe in Syracuse. We hope this organizational meeting will allow us to continue growing, and will allow Believers to have an influence on this organization while contributing ideas and feedback. Hope to see you all Wednesday! Click Here To RSVP To The Event by Paul
All you had to do was walk in the door of BC (a gourmet restaurant on Fayette St. in downtown Syracuse) and you knew immediately that this event was going to be very different from Believe In Syracuse's first event. I can't pin down exactly what the difference was; perhaps it was the exceptionally talented piano player who entertained us with some contemporary music as well as some cool jazz, perhaps it was the gourmet pizza put out for us to munch on, all I know is no matter what caused the change, it was tangible. A professional atmosphere pervaded the night - which is good because unlike our last event at Al's Wine and Whiskey, this was a networking event. Believe In Syracuse believes everyone should love the city they live in, and we are spreading the word of what we are all about by holding various social and networking events. This particular event was networking in the most social of ways, and with a twist. The twist being that everyone filled out a survey telling what they were looking for and who they could help, so like minded people could be introduced. I personally set up an employer at the Samaritan Center with a person looking for a job at a not-for-profit company, and I must say it felt good to help an organization and an individual so concerned with doing good in our community. This way of networking turned out to be, from my perspective, an efficient way to get things done, leaving more time to socialize and really get to know your fellow Believers. While the beginning of the night was all business, the end of the night was all fun, and I walked away feeling that I had heard a lot of great stories and made a few new friends. I loved that we can get a large group of people out to socialize and a completely different yet equally large group of people to come out and network. Yet more proof that when you get out there and experience the people and places in Syracuse you are bound to walk away happy. Our city has a lot to offer, Believe In Syracuse is proving that each and every week. This is the time to go out and grab life by the horns. If you want to get involved, check out our Believe In Syracuse General Interest Meeting where we are going to set the groundwork that is going to change Syracuse for the better. It will be held on Wednesday June 26th at 5:30pm at the Soule Branch Library 101 Springfield Rd. Click Here for more info and then RSVP. By Katie Bennett Last Saturday I went a little out of my comfort zone to participate in a Believe in Syracuse event for a GREAT cause, Group Gardening at the Sarah House. When I heard about this event, I was a little nervous, I don't have much of a "green thumb" and I had absolutely no experience in the gardening department. When I approached the Sarah House on Roberts Ave I will admit I was a little nervous and didn't know what to expect. I couldn't tell apart a weed from any sort of plant and had no idea how to mulch! I was greeted by Julie Foy, a volunteer who helped organize the event. She led me over to a pile of gardening gloves and tools and we got to work! Throughout the morning, a group of volunteers and myself took on the gardens of the Sarah House, digging, weeding and mulching. This event allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, trying something new and contributing to a great cause while doing so. It was a great experience meeting new people, and learning a few new things! Hi Believers! My name is Katherine Bennett and I am so happy to announce that I will be joining the Believe In Syracuse team as the new summer intern. I just finished up my sophomore year at Syracuse University, as a student enrolled in the Whitman School of Management. As soon as I learned about this amazing organization, I knew that it was something that I wanted to become involved in. Born and raised in CNY, throughout my lifetime I have been able to experience all of the awesome things that the Syracuse area has to offer. Growing up, I have memories of visiting the MOST and IMAX theatre, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo on a school field trip and Sunday picnics and bike rides at Onondaga Lake Parkway with my family. Also, continuing my education at Syracuse University has allowed me to further my belief that Syracuse is a city on the rise. Thousands of students from all around the country, and the world, come to this great city every year to attend college. One of my goals through my involvement in this organization is to not only get them to understand what an amazing city Syracuse is, but to get them to want to stay in this city and help it flourish through a promotion of a career-focused networking program. I look forward to working with all of you to achieve our mission of promoting living in Syracuse, and it as a city on the rise! Best, Katherine Bennett |
