In 2005, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued the Onondaga Lake Cleanup Plan. In 2007, Honeywell began to implement that plan. Six years later, their progress is ahead of schedule. They have completed dredging the bottom of the lake and have completed treating the water.
Over the past year, teams of scientists have deemed the lake clean enough to swim in. If you know anything about the history of Onondaga Lake, you know that this represents a huge change from where we were 10 years ago when the cleanup plan was issued. For decades, Onondaga Lake was easily one of the most polluted lakes in the country. That's why the progress we're seeing is worth celebrating.
If you're curious about the lake cleanup, want to network with our members or play some bocce, join us in the park at Willow Bay. There will be free food and music. Can you join us? Click here for more info and RSVP.
